Women in Leadership Profile: Michele L. Turner MBCP, FBCI, CISA, CRISC By Deb Moller “If you would go fast, go alone. But if you would go far, bring others along.” - African Proverb As a woman of color, Michele is aware that there are biases in the world that can impact how others see the value that she has to offer. She insists that it’s the invisible differences, things we may not see or know about other people that are a critical source of diversity that should not be overlooked. For example, an invisible diversity characteristic in her life is [...]

Diversity: The Invisible Side

2021-04-29T21:47:13+00:00

By Kellie Hale I don’t believe the term “diversity” should be viewed as a buzzword or fad. It is an important word that should continue to be a part of a person’s lexicon. For me, there is not a day that goes by where I don’t learn something new when it comes to diversity. Recently, I learned the term “invisible diversity” from one of my Advisory Board members, Michele Turner. In talking with Michele, she mentioned how invisible diversity is an integral part of emergency management and everyday life. That diversity is not only what a person sees on the [...]

Mrs. Roosevelt encouraged her husband to appoint Florence Kerr as project lead to research and implement ways on how women can utilize their skills during World War II. The two women helped establish the development of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD). The purpose of the OCD was to bring communities across the United States health programs and medical care [...]

Women in Leadership Profile: Toya Moore

2021-05-04T23:11:34+00:00

By Deb Moller When Toya Moore was a child, her family doctor provided care in a hospital setting.  When she’d go for a check-up, she saw a sea of white people in white coats.  One day, she saw something different – a black woman in a white coat.  The woman was kind and professional, excellent at her job.  Toya learned she was a medical assistant. The impression she made was so strong that Toya decided to become a medical assistant one day.  Another black woman in a white coat.  Another beacon of possibility to a black child in [...]

A sailor living aboard a boat for seven years. A woman who taught Bill Gates to use a technology program. A bee-keeper.  An engineering student who did poorly in her college classes yet became one of the first to switch from manual to electronic drafting.   A white-hat hacker.  A student at the bottom of her class at Pennisula College due to numerical dyslexia. A United Nations [...]

Japan Insights on Preparedness

2021-04-07T22:28:36+00:00

By Nancy Aird March 3, 2011, marks the tenth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Tsunami, and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster. Japan faced this experience with “BOSAI,” a science that can save your life. Nationally this cultural idea of preparedness /resiliency evolved from the EDO period experiences of running urban fires. Today the nation is faced yearly with emergency response activation from earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, floods, landslides, snow, and volcano eruption. Disaster preparedness is exercised for and handled by all levels of society - national, community, personal, and schools. Check out Japanese insights and lessons for handling emergencies on [...]
